Go East!

Some of you may be wondering what exactly Go East is, having seen it pop up on our schedule from time to time. specifically, we’ve been doing some preparations for it on the first Fridays as part of Penn Ave’s Unblurred gallery crawl.

Now it can be told! Go East is a new program we’re launching that is designed to showcase the myriad talents of people in the East End. Our goal is to have each show be something different; music, theater, dance, film, you name it. Each Go East program will also have a visual art component as well – along with free food & drink. It’s a great way to cap off a night of Penn Ave Unblurred.

More important, however, is the idea behind Go East. We’ve been seeing a lot of new artists making their homes here in East Liberty, Friendship, Garfield, etc. Artists go where the creativity and the cheap rent are, and this area is bursting with new ideas. That’s why we’re looking to create a focal point for all that new energy here on the first Friday of every month.

December 5, from 6-9pm. Here’s what we have for you:
Visual art: By Cassandra Staub, really interesting photography of bodies in environments. lifeisghost.com

Music: Cello extraordinaire Midge Crickett takes the stage to perform, alongside the unclassifiable master of the kazoo Buddy Nutt, and local singer-songwriter Joy Brown. Plus duo Get Plush shows off their unique electronica/video skills in the lobby.

Video: Derek Burgess treats us to his tonal documentary about the g20 protests, and the Waffle Shop is bringing highlights from their Waffle Shop Talk Show all night long.

I’m excited as it’s the first time we’re presenting a full show for you. I hope you’ll come out and see what Go East is all about – you’ll even get a look at our new Go East membership program, launching in 2010!
