Bill Shannon – “Stay Up”

KST Presents

Shannon defies gravity…His gliding mobility seems almost magical. —The New York Times

CREATIVE COMMUNITY RESIDENCY PREVIEW

A world-renowned break dancer and skate punk, Bill Shannon is an interdisciplinary artist known for wielding his crutches as tools of expression. Don’t miss an in-progress showing of Stay Up, Shannon’s first performance work to be shown in Pittsburgh since he moved back to his hometown in 2005.

This evening of experimental performance uses technology and movement, seeing and feeling, to explore the mental bandwidth required by some to achieve tasks others take for granted.

Shannon’s work for Stay Up engages the disabled experience through dance and also features a new multimedia dance performance art work—a progression from his “Fragmentation” video series.

The choreography of Stay Up was created in collaboration with Maria Sheridan—who has profound peripheral neuropathy—and Ru Emmons. The duet emerges, in part, from Sheridan’s life of problem-solving through movement strategies: for Sheridan walking is a thought exercise in propulsion. Standing still a complex process of physical anchoring and mental observation.

“This work is a culmination of my interdisciplinary explorations: It’s physical theater, it’s performance art, it’s dance, it’s sociology, it’s cultural theory…it’s all those things.”

Presented as part of Bill Shannon’s extended Creative Community Residency, designed to explore ways to engage Pittsburgh’s diverse communities in creative process.

Funding for this project provided by the 2015 Investing in Professional Artists Grant, a partnership of the Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments.
